Broadway’s biggest night of the year, the 63rd annual Tony Awards, recently recognized the season’s best theatrical productions, which are sure to be heading our way with touring productions in seasons to come.
"Billy Elliot,” the engaging musical about a ballet-obsessed young boy, danced away with10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the most of any show during this year’s annual awards ceremony.
"God of Carnage," a dark comedy from the author of “Art,” Yasmina Reza, won Best Play, Best Director and Best Actress.
Other big winners were Geoffrey Rush, who took home Best Actor Tony for his portrayal of a dying monarch in the tragicomic "Exit the King," Angela Lansbury, who received her record-tying fifth Tony for Featured Actress in the play revival of Noel Coward's comedy "Blithe Spirit," and Roger Robinson for Featured Actor in a Play for "Joe Turner's Come and Gone." Featured performances in musicals brought emotional speeches from Karen Olivo, who won for her fiesty Anita in "West Side Story," and Gregory Jbara, who plays the dedicated dad in "Billy Elliot." Plus, the all-American "Hair" won as Best Musical Revival.
The Broward Center also gave out a Tony-related award of sorts. The lucky winner of our “Pick the Tony Winners” contest, held in affiliation with Broadway Across America, was Daniella N. from Parkland. She won two tickets to opening night of every show in the Broward Center’s 2009-2010 Broadway series.
Coming to the Broward Center this season are a number of Tony winners making their South Florida premier, including the “Best Musical” of last year “In The Heights,” “Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps,” and the beloved “Mary Poppins.” Also on the schedule this season is Topol in his final touring performances of “Fiddler on the Roof,” the Tony-winning “The Color Purple,” and the lighthearted comedy, “Legally Blonde The Musical.”
