Flamenco in the Sun Returns with Innovative Program

June 15, 2009 – Fort Lauderdale, FL – The spark and intensity of live Flamenco returns to South Florida with the seventh season of Flamenco in the Sun, from July 23rd through August 2nd, fea-turing performances at the Amaturo Theater (Broward Center for the Performing Arts); plus workshops, a smashing, free-to-the-public Kick-off Reception at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, a gallery event at the historic New River Inn, topped off with coffee and dessert at your up-close Tablao performance, Café Cantante, on the Parker Playhouse stage. The Festival Kick-Off Reception, on July 23rd starts at 5:30 PM, is free to the public, and begins with Spanish wines and light tapas followed by a viewing of the Flamenco documentary, El Turista Soy Yo (I am the Turist), by Tina Bardusco, starring Luis Agujeta and featuring guitarist Carlos Heredia. As an added attraction, Canela Pura will present a Flamenco costume fashion show before the film. This event is sponsored by Riverwalk A & E and the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, which also hosts the event at One East Las Olas Boulevard.

Flamenco in the Sun’s Opening Gala, From New York to Seville, will be held on July 24th and 25th both nights at 8:00 PM at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Amaturo Theater, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. The two performances will feature traditional and contemporary works by renowned Flamenco composer and guitarist José Luís Rodríguez (Sevil-la) and dancer and choreographer Nelida Tirado (New York) with guest musicians from Seville and New York. The evening will open with Nelida Tirado Flamenco in "Solos," followed by an excerpt of Rodriguez's latest concert "De Mis Manos," praised by critics as one of the best guitar concerts at the Festival de Jeréz 2009. The finale will bring the artists together in the premiere of a new music and dance collaboration. Tickets range from $20 to $35.

The highly popular, Café Cantante, returns to the Parker Playhouse stage converted into a traditional Spanish tablao and café scene and served up with coffee and dessert for the diehard fans of Flamenco and anyone wishing to be initiated into the deep roots of the gypsy dance cul-ture. This traditional Flamenco event will have two performances on July 26th at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Flamenco Imagery Yesterday and Today, consists of a seven-day exhibit from July 28th through August 2nd from Noon to 4 PM daily, highlighted by a Meet the Artists Cocktail Reception on Thursday, July 30th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at The New River Inn, 219 SW 2nd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. This is an exclusive gallery event featuring photographs and costumes from the 1950’s to the present. Photographer Tom Tracy will take patrons through his journey of modern day Flamenco. Dancers, Luisita Sevilla, Adela Green and Victoria Trabue will take us back to a Flamenco of their past telling their stories through their costumes, written text and pho-tographs. The event is free and open to the public.

Flamenco in the Sun concludes with a scintillating concert, Flamenco 24 Horas (Fla-menco 24 Hours) at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Amaturo Theater, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, on August 1st at 8:00 PM and August 2nd at 5:00 PM. The audience will be drawn into the world of Flamenco as seen through the transformed lives of three women as they interact with Flamenco in different situations and moments of their lives. Flamenco Bajo el Sol Regresa con Programación Inovadora

15 de junio 2009 – Fort Lauderdale, FL – La chispeante intensidad del flamenco en vivo regresa al sur de la Florida con la séptima temporada de Flamenco in the Sun entre el 23 de Julio al 2 de agosto destacandose con rendimientos artísticos en el Teatro Amaturo (Broward Center for the Performing Arts); a demás de talleres, una recepción genial y gratis al público en el Museo de Arte de Fort Lauderdale, una exhibición singular en el histórico New River Inn, y como si eso fuera poco, se les ofrece café con postre en el siempre popular tablao, Café Cantante en la tarima del Paker Playhouse.

La Recepción de Apertura del Festival fijada para el 23 de Julio da comienzo a las 5:30 PM y es gratis para el público. La Gala de Apertura Flamenco in the Sun-Desde Nueva York a Sevilla, se dará a cabo el 24 y 25 de julio, ambas nóches a las 8:00 PM en el Teatro Amaturo del Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. Las dos obras artísticas destacarán piezas contemporaneas y tradicionales del compositor y guitarrista flamenco, José Luís Rodríguez (Sevilla) y de la bailarina y coreógrafa, Nelida Tirado (New York) acompañados de músicos sevillanos y neoyorquinos. Nélida Tirado Flamenco abrirá el espectáculo con Solos, seguida por Rodríguez quién ejecutará selecciones de su mas recién concierto, De Mis Manos, que fué elogiado por los críticos como uno del los mejores conciertos de guitarra en el Festival de Jeréz 2009. Los dos artístas se uniran en un estreno colaborativo de música y baile para culminar la noche. La taquilla fluctua entre $20 y $35.

El altamente popular, Café Cantante, retorna a la taríma del Parker Playhouse la cuál se convertirá en un tablao español tradicional acompañado de café y postre para la dedicada fanaticada del flamenco y cualquiera que desee iniciarse en las raíces profundas de esta cultura de baile gitano.
