Elementary – High School Students take part in educational workshop with musical ensemble on Sept 9
FORT LAUDERDALE – Designated as one of the first three Points of Culture in the United States by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts celebrates Brazilian culture and music with two special events in September.
The community is invited to celebrate Brazilian Independence Day with a free performance by Clube do Choro de Miami with special guest Rose Max as part of the Sunday SunTrust Jazz Brunch in the Peck Courtyard on Sunday, September 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This family-friendly event will also feature storytelling, puppetry and other interactive games sponsored by Vamos Falar Portugues.
Ambassador Luiz Augusto de Araujo Castro, Consul General of Brazil in Miami, will present the Broward Center with a $30,000 donation in connection with the Point of Culture program at a special ceremony, which will take place at the Center on the same day at11:30 a.m.
“In the context of the celebration of our National Day, we are pleased to reaffirm our full support for the remarkable work that the Broward Center for the Performing Arts has been carrying out as the officially designated Brazilian Point of Culture for this region,” said Ambassador Araujo Castro. “The large and dynamic Brazilian community of South Florida is proud of the valuable efforts of the Broward Center in promoting the rich culture of Brazil in this unique multicultural environment.”
In addition to its stature as a Point of Culture, the Broward Center has also been named as the community's first international cultural embassy by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.
On Wednesday, September 9, students from the Pompano Beach High School’s International Affairs Magnet Program, Pompano Beach Middle School and Pompano Beach Elementary School will participate in a special Broward Center educational workshop with Clube do Choro de Miami. The group, comprised of Brazilian musicians living in Miami, will present an interactive lecture and demonstration exploring Brazilian music and rhythms.
Choro is perhaps best described as instrumental music characterized by improvisation and virtuosity with African influences and important features in interpretation. Students will learn about the genre’s musical characteristics, formal structures, influences and history.
“We are delighted to continue our efforts to promote Brazilian culture in all its forms to the community, and especially pleased to connect students at all levels to the richness of Brazilian music,” said Kelley Shanley, President/CEO of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “The Point of Culture program shines as an outstanding example of how we can work together to achieve shared goals, and we are deeply grateful to the Brazilian Consulate in Miami and the Ministry of Culture of Brazil for their continued commitment to this initiative.’
Presented for the second consecutive year, the workshop is also sponsored by Vamos Falar Portugues with support from Broward County Schools, Clube do Choro, Consulate of Brazil in Miami, Acontece.com, Gazeta Newspaper and BrOnline.
The SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch on September 6 will also feature Caliente Jazz Sounds at the Esplanade Stage, Steve B. and Friends at the Connie Hoffmann Gazebo and Billy Bones at Las Olas Riverfront.
The Broward Center is located at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Parking is available at the county garage located on S.W. 2nd Street between S.W. 2nd Avenue and Brickell Avenue or at the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District parking garage at S.W. Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
