FORT LAUDERDALE – Since its world premiere in Argentina in 2002, the Broadway-style spectacular Tanguera –The Tango Musical has broken new theatrical ground but perhaps the biggest perception it has shattered is that it takes two to tango. Make that more like millions - according to the show’s fans made during tours to China, Russia, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Chile and Spain.
Now the dance and theater phenomenon comes to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Wednesday, October 21 through Sunday, October 25 direct from its United States premiere in New York.
More than 30 dancer/actors perform sensual dance sequences to tell the spellbinding tragic love story of a young French girl and the Argentine dreamer willing to face any adversity for their love despite the mobster cabaret owner who tries to come between them. The score features classic tangos such as La Cumparsita, Derecho Viejo, Danzarin and El Choclo as well as new pieces.
Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley is delighted to open the new season with an exciting international blockbuster and says, “The Tony Award-winning Contact along with Lord of the Dance and other crossover hits have created a new theatrical experience that borrows from all the classic elements of music and dance infused with Broadway spectacle to create a new form that raises the pulse and brings audiences to their feet. Tanguera – The Tango Musical delivers those same thrills.”
Critically acclaimed during its premiere in Argentina, Tanguera - The Tango Musical won five top entertainment awards including “Best Musical,” “Best Production,” and “Best Choreography.” La Nacion raved, “The successful choreography of Mora Godoy looks precise and varied, showing a wonderful performance of artists who not only put their bodies into the show, but also their souls.”
Designated by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as our community's first international cultural embassy, the Broward Center is home to the show’s southeast premiere. “While the tango was born in Argentina, it had many multi-cultural influences from the European immigrants who championed it to the Germans who invented the bandoneón,” Shanley says. “The global success of Tanguera underscores the tango’s universal appeal, and we are delighted to bring the show here to South Florida where we have long celebrated the richness of Latin American culture.”
Diego Romay, who also wrote the show’s storyline along with Dolres Espeja, produces Tanguera – The Tango Musical. The show was the first original theatrical production for Romay Entertainment, which for more than 40 years has produced Broadway musicals in Argentina and Spain, as well as developed international projects.
Romay explains the success of the show by saying “What’s special and new about Tanguera is that it isn’t just a show, it’s a musical. Tango is dance and music, but on top of that, Tanguera tells a story… which is why we bring cast members who not only dance, but act! The dramatic moments driving the plot are characterized by very modern contemporary elements, while the technology, the lighting, and the entire production is tremendously complex.”
