FORT LAUDERDALE – Grammy-nominated acoustic-folk duo Sam and Ruby will perform an intimate, club-style concert on Saturday, October 10 at 7:30pm in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Sam Brooker from Green Bay, Wis. and Ruby Amanfu from Ghana, West Africa would seem to be an unlikely pairing yet they have been compared with such great duet partners as Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The Nashville-based duo which blends pop, folk, jazz and soul has toured with Patti LaBelle and their hit song "Heaven's My Home" was nominated for a Grammy Award and featured in the movie The Secret Life of Bees.
The duo recently released their first album, “Sam & Ruby: The Here and the Now," and it features acoustic and electric guitars, brushes of percussion and the occasional string section. Their songs convey a variety of emotion from heartache on “More” to hopefulness on “Ain’t Love Something” to a clear-eyed romanticism on “The Here and the Now.” The duo will be featured on the PBS series “Legends and Lyrics,” a show that profiles hot, new singer/songwriters.
The Examiner noted that Sam and Ruby are "truly like nothing…ever heard…something ethereal, almost spiritual…their undeniable connection transcends their surroundings and stays with the listener."
