Student Enrichment in the Arts (SEAS):
Helping public school students enjoy free performances
Since 1991, more than a million and a half Broward County Public School students have attended free performances at the Broward Center through the Student Enrichment in the Arts Program (SEAS). From Sesame Street Live! to the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, over 100,000 students every year have enjoyed outstanding shows thanks to our partnership with the School Board of Broward County.
Recognized as a national model for arts education, SEAS won the National Award of Excellence from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association.
SEAS also received the prestigious Magna Award from the American School Board Journal and the Encore Award for best collaboration between the School Board of Broward County and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Free bus transportation between schools and the theater is provided for all SEAS performances, including a new program offering evening events for teachers, students and their families.

Reading Residencies:
Strengthening Literacy through Performance
Research shows a strong link between reading comprehension skills and the dramatic enactment of stories. The Title One Reading Residency Program strengthens reading skills through theatrical performances of children’s literature aligned with FCAT reading strategies.
In its inaugural season, the program reached 20,000 second and fourth grade students in Upward Bound Schools. Students learned plot development, story sequencing and inference.
Reading Residency Partners include Broward County Schools, The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The John F. Kennedy Center and Title One Funding.

Reading Readiness and Community Partnerships:
A Foundation in Literacy for Younger Children
Reading Readiness addresses literacy in the classroom and at home for three- and four-year old Head Start children and their families. Theatrical performances are combined with literature and reading strategies to start families on a path where reading is central.
Parent study guides are printed in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Creole. Hard-bound books are given to each child to help each family establish a home library. This year, the program was expanded to include Head Start programs in four schools—helping 220 young children and their families.
An assessment component is a part of the program to document the progress of each child.
