INCREDIBLE MUSIC, THEATER AND COMEDY TAKE THE STAGE IN APRIL AT THE BROWARD CENTER

Slow Burn Theatre Company’s acclaimed season continues with the Tony® Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical, inspired by the genius who created the tales of James and the Giant Peach and Willie Wonka, on stage through Sunday, April 10. Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, the musical revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With the book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, this captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages worldwide. he season is presented by American National Bank, South Florida’s premier community bank. Friday, April 1 and 8 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 2 and 9 at 1 and 7:30 p.m; Sunday, April 3 at 1 and 6:30 p.m. and April 10 at 1 p.m.; and Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $49-$65. Students and teachers can access $25 tickets with their credentials.

The Bank of America: Broadway in Fort Lauderdale season, presented by Broadway Across America, Florida Theatrical Association and the Broward Center, continues in the Au-Rene Theater with the musical Broadway hit Cats from Tuesday, April 5 through Sunday, April 10. Cats, the spectacular record-breaking musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, has captivated audiences in over 30 countries and 15 languages. Audiences and critics alike are rediscovering this beloved musical with breathtaking music, including one of the most treasured songs in musical theater, "Memory." Winner of seven Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Cats tells the story of one magical night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which cat will be reborn. Performances are Tuesday to Saturday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m.; Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35-90.50 with $140 Spirit Club Level tickets.

A visit to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – Live! is on the calendar in the Au-Rene Theater for Saturday, April 16 at 4 p.m. Daniel Tiger and all his friends from the beloved Emmy® Award-winning PBS KIDS television series are hopping back aboard the trolley for Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live: Neighbor Day. In Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live: Neighbor Day, Daniel Tiger and his family along with O the Owl, Miss Elaina, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday and more familiar friends will take audiences on an interactive adventure to the Neighborhood of Make Believe, sharing stories of friendship, helping others and celebrating new experiences. The live show features new songs and fan-favorite series, including the beloved "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" The live theatrical production is filled with music, dancing and wonderful surprises that will warm the hearts of preschoolers, parents and grandparents alike. Tickets are $29-$49 with lap seats for children 12 months and younger at $10. An additional $79 on any ticket includes a VIP package.

 

Presented by the Broward Center and Outback Presents, Nate Bargatze’s “Raincheck Tour” comes to the Au-Rene Theater on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. Following the continued success of his Netflix special, The Tennessee Kid, comedian, actor and writer Nate Bargatze brings his best-selling Good Problem to Have tour to Fort Lauderdale. Bargatze was part of Jimmy Fallon's Clean Cut Comedy Tour and has appeared numerous times on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Conan. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, receiving critical acclaim. Bargatze is in production on a pilot for ABC, which he created and stars in. He was featured in Esquire as a “Best New Comedian” by Jim Gaffigan, one of Marc Maron's “Comedians to Watch” in Rolling Stone, one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch" and was #1 on Vulture's “50 Comedians You Should Know.” His debut one-hour special, Full Time Magic, premiered on Comedy Central followed by his debut album, Yelled at by a Clown, which reached No. 1 on the iTunes Comedy and Billboard's Top Ten Comedy Charts. The Broward Center welcomes New York native, Eric D'Alessandro, to the intimate Abdo New River Room for four shows on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. His passion for comedy is equally credited to his creative mindset, as well as his big Italian American family which inspires his raw and uncensored, relatable rhetoric. His YouTube sketches feature original characters like "Maria Marie," as well as celebrity impressions. He has been featured on multiple podcasts and TV shows. He has toured up and down the east coast, in addition to shows in Canada and Las Vegas. Most notably, D’Alessandro was featured in the 2016 drama/mystery movie Nerve, with Emma Roberts and Dave Franco, in part because the film's directors added him to the script after seeing his viral videos. This show is recommended for audiences 21 and up. Tickets are $30-$40. An additional $25 on any ticket includes a VIP package.

 

Colin Hay, the former lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the pop sensation Men at Work is best known for his captivating stories and evocative songs, peppering his performances with 80s anthems such as "Down Under," "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Overkill." Turning raw emotion into musical inspiration, Hay reinvented himself as a solo artist and successfully developed a new generation of devoted fans. Presented by Broward Center and AEG Presents, Hay comes to the Amaturo Theater on Friday, April 22 at 8 p.m. His latest 2017 release, Fierce Mercy, is an epic, cinematic step forward delivering what is has been considered the defining album of his solo career. Recorded in both Los Angeles and Nashville and mixed by Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White) and Gordon Hammond (Buddy Miller, Don Williams), the album explores themes of love and loss, mortality and even the odd UFO sighting, but always with the singular perspective and insightful wit that define Hay's work. Tickets are $44.50-$64.50 with a VIP experience available.

 

With her sultry, expressive vocals and evocative piano playing, Grammy® & JUNO Award-winner Diana Krall will mesmerize the audience on Tuesday, April 26 at 8 p.m. Krall, the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of Billboard Jazz Albums, reunited with Tommy LiPuma, the Grammy Award-winning producer of many of her acclaimed albums (including All of You, The Look Of Love, Live In Paris and Turn up the Quiet) for her 2020 album This Dream of You. This romanic concert will have the audience swooning. Tickets are $50-$145 with Spirit Club Level tickets at $150.

 

Persented but the Broward Center and AEG Presents, The Piano Guys take the Au-Rene Theater stage on Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m. From ingenious covers of Taylor Swift and Coldplay to mash-up arrangements of Michael Jackson with Mozart and One Republic with Beethoven, The Piano Guys deliver an eclectic mix of original arrangements and inventive cinematography. Tickets are $39.50-$175 with Spirit Club Level tickets at $119.50. A VIP package is also available.              

 

Jen Fulwiler got moms through quarantine with her viral social media sketches, and now she's back on “The Minivan Fabulous Tour” which makes a stop in the Amaturo Theater on Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. The minivan driving mom of six, has been featured on the Today Show and CNN. Her podcast, This Is Jen, debuted in the iTunes Comedy Top 10. Her standup comedy special, The Naughty Corner, is now on Amazon Prime. This is event is not appropriate for children under 12. Tickets are $27.50-32.50.

 

From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears around the door, Sally and her brother know that The Cat in the Hat is the funniest, most mischievous cat that they have ever met. With the trickiest of tricks and the craziest of ideas, he is certainly loads of fun but what will happen if their mother finds out? Originally produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain, and adapted and originally directed by Katie Mitchel, the production is recommended for grade levels pre-K-3. There are three ways to enjoy the production.

• Two Smart Stage Matinee Series, generously underwritten by JM Family Enterprises, Inc. are Friday, April 29 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. with tickets priced at $8.48 with $3 lap seats available for infants 12 months old or younger.
• Two performances in the Books Alive series are presented Saturday, April 30 at 1 and 3 p.m. with tickets priced at $17.50 with $5 lap seats available for infants 12 months old or younger.
• A sensory inclusive performance is offered on Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. This performance is intended to create a welcoming and supportive environment for children and adults on the autism spectrum as well as individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities. Slight adjustments have been made to the production including reduced sound levels, no flashing or strobe lights and minimal special effects. An area adjacent to the theater has been designated as a Quiet Room with specially trained volunteers to provide audience support. Audiences will enjoy a complimentary pre-show art activity provided by Young at Art Museum and a post-show character meet & greet. Tickets are $15 with $5 lap seats available for infants 12 months old or younger.
