JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL PRESENTS THE 2022/2023 FAMILY FUN SERIES

Published: Sep 26, 2022

Delivering the excitement of live theater as children’s favorite storybook characters come to thrilling life on stage, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital presents the 2022/2023 Family Fun Series in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The Series features: It's Okay To Be Different, Acoustic Rooster's Barnyard Boogie, The Tortoise and the Hare: The Next Gen and Stone Soup.

These shows bring families together, spark creativity and engage the imagination as only live theater can. Each ticket also includes pre-performance activities starting one hour prior to showtime.

Tickets may be purchased by subscription or to individual productions. Tickets to individual performances are $16 in advance and $18 the day of the performance with $3 lap tickets for children 12 months of age and younger. Subscriptions that offer a $2 discount on each event are also available.

Three contemporary stories by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Todd Parr come to life with Parr's signature blend of playfulness and sensitivity with It's Okay To Be Different on Saturday, November 5 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Adapted and staged for young audiences by The Mermaid Theater, this hour-long production features three books from his collection. It's Okay to Be Different cleverly delivers important messages of acceptance, understanding and self-confidence. The Earth Book is a sweet homage to our beautiful planet. This is My Hair is a funny exploration of how silly hair can be and that no matter how your hair looks, you should always feel good about yourself. Recommended for grade levels Pre K-2, these stories encourage early literacy, enhance emotional development, celebrate multiculturalism and promote character growth.

New York Times best-selling author Kwame Alexander brings two of his beloved children's books, Acoustic Rooster and Indigo Blume, to the Amaturo Theater with Acoustic Rooster's Barnyard Boogie in the Amaturo Theater on Saturday, January 28 at 11 am. and 1 p.m. For this Kennedy Center commission, Alexander teams up with his writing partner Mary Rand Hess and long-time musical collaborator Randy Preston to tell a story about being scared, being brave, and believing in yourself. With special guests like Duck Ellington and Ms. Dairy Parton—this musical adaptation promises to have children (and families) dancing in their seats.

The Tortoise and the Hare: The Next Gen continues the series on Saturday, February 25 at 11 a.m. and 1 pm.  The Tortoise and the Hare of Aesop's classic fable now have children of their own as they explore daily distractions in smart phones and video games create a new landscape of lost connections to life experiences. The Next Gen features Tortoise Junior and Lil' Hare in a whole new kind of race where their adventures lead them into unexpected territory. Old man Tortoise and Big Daddy Hare must come together despite their differences to find and save their children. What hurdles will they have to overcome to make it to the finish line? With dazzling visuals, poignant storytelling and the creative use of music from classical to pop, this production brings the tale into a new brilliant light.

The Series culminates with Stone Soup on Saturday, April 29 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. In this heartwarming musical adaptation of the classic European folktale of trickery and friendship, Peter, a hungry sailor, has no luck getting a free meal from the stingy citizens of a tiny village so he decides to turn the table. He invites the villagers to enjoy his famous delicious Stone Soup whose recipe is known only to seafarers and legendary adventurers. He promises to provide the main ingredient if the villagers provide all the other ingredients. Join Peter and his trusty parrot, Admiral, as they teach the villagers a lesson in friendship and sharing.

Two shows in the series are also presented at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center with The Tortoise and the Hare: The Next Gen on Sunday, February 19 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Stone Soup on Sunday, April 23 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is located at 3385 N.E. 188 Street in Aventura.
