A dashing Broadway leading man, a musical love triangle from Broadway and the eternal musical match of Gilbert and Sullivan deliver shows for arts lovers at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and The Parker.
Fall in love and get in the spirit of Valentine’s Day as Slow Burn Theatre company presents Honeymoon in Vegas - The Musical in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center Saturday, February 4-Sunday, February 19. Based on the hit 1992 film, Honeymoon in Vegas is a hilarious new musical that centers on an unusual love triangle, featuring a wonderful new score by Tony®-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown. Mild-mannered Brooklynite, Jack, promised his dying mother that he would never get married, but that was before he met his sweet and beautiful girlfriend, Betsy. Haunted by a fear of mom's retribution, Jack avoids proposing but when he finally summons the nerve to whisk oh-so-patient Betsy off to Las Vegas to get hitched, a dashing gambler named Tommy threatens to sweep his fiancée away to a life of luxury in Hawaii. Realizing what he's about to lose, Jack is determined to do anything to give his love story a happy ending. It all adds up to an action-packed honeymoon that no one will ever forget! Bet the house on this insanely funny new musical that is full of skydiving Elvises, sexy chorus girls, red-hot romance and really cold feet. The 2022/2023 Slow Burn Theatre Season is presented by American National Bank. Performances are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday at 1 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 p.m. The matinee performance on Sunday, February 12 at 1 p.m. will be open captioned in which a text display located to the side of the stage scrolls words in synchronization with the performance. Ramin Karimloo, currently starring as Nicky Arnstein opposite Lea Michele in the smash hit Broadway revival of Funny Girl, joins Seth Rudetsky in The Broadway Concert Series at The Parker presented by Mark Cortale on February 26 at 7 p.m. When comparing him to the real-life Arnstein whom Karimloo portrays, The New York Times gushed, “That Arnstein wasn’t remotely gorgeous, and Karimloo totally is, we can allow. Karimloo also sings beautifully and, to the extent the new book tries to beef up the role, he’s got the beef to do it.” An Olivier and Tony Award nominee, Karimloo made his name in some of the West End's most enduring productions, most notably Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. On Broadway, he originated the role of Gleb Vaganov in Anastasia and starred in the revival of Funny Girl. He joins Rudetsky, whom the New York Times dubbed “The Mayor of Broadway, in a spontaneous evening of show-stopping songs and hilarity. Hosted and music directed by Sirius XM Radio star Rudetsky, the unique format of the series that differentiates it from any other is a seamless mix of intimate behind-the-scenes stories prompted by Rudetsky’s insightful, funny and revealing questions and the music from the artists’ stellar careers. Tickets are $39-$69 with $125 VIP tickets that offer a meet and greet with the artists.
The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players perform the new and critically acclaimed production of The Mikado in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, March 12 at 4 p.m. At the heart of this tale is a love story: a beautiful schoolgirl loves the romantic wandering minstrel, but she is engaged to the executioner. This romantic triangle takes the usual course of thwarted love, until the arrival of a fearsome noble woman claiming the minstrel as her “perjured lover,” and later of the emperor himself, with his own list of punishments to fit the crime. The history and inspiration for the writing of The Mikado is center stage as the real life characters of Victorian London’s D’Oyly Carte Opera Company are combined with the imagined setting of Titipu as they take audiences on a fantastic voyage to a land where the timeless libretto, beautiful music, and all of the favorite characters await. This new prologue frames the classic work for today's audiences and underscores how The Mikado can be enjoyed by artists and audiences of all backgrounds. This event is presented as part of the 2022/2023 Broward Center Dance and Classical Series and supported by Funding Arts Broward, supporting innovative local visual and performing arts in Broward County.
