STAGED READING OF NEW MUSICAL CELEBRATES
Published: Jul 10, 2019
FORT LAUDERDALE – The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Banana Buzz, Ltd. present a staged concert reading of Orange Juice: The Psychedelic Musical©, a new production in its final stages of development. Performances will be held in the Abdo New River Room on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Told through the music of famous bands that didn't make it to the Woodstock music festival, the musical follows a conservative father who embarks on a voyage of discovery after hitching a ride on the bus of a band headed there. Along the way he learns the weird and wonderful reasons some of the era’s greatest rockers missed out on playing the most iconic music festival of all time.
The musical is created by Trevor Whittaker and Glynn Semple. “When we think of the ‘60s there are some very famous bands that spring to mind but many of them didn’t play at Woodstock,” said Whittaker, who will also direct he staged reading. “They gave some pretty unbelievable reasons for turning it down too and that’s what initially inspired me to write Orange Juice. One of my favorites is Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull who allegedly had a problem with naked ladies running about all over the place!”
Performed without sets or costumes, this staged concert has music direction by Caryl Ginsberg Fantel and choreography by Katie Thomas. The cast of South Florida theater veterans, many of whom previously appeared in at the Broward Center in productions with Slow Burn Theatre Company, includes Matthew Korinko, Jinon Deeb, Andrew Rodriguez-Triana, Elijah Word, Joshua Dobarganes, Rick Peña, Sara Elizabeth Grant, Leigh Green, Jen Chia, Alex Danielle Frost, Katie Thomas and Cameron Jordan.
“There are a lot of people who remember the ‘60s but even those of us too young to have been there can still be inspired by the positivity and desire to change the world that fueled the hippie movement,” said Semple. “And, of course, people of any generation can enjoy the music!”
Following the performance, audience members have the chance to meet with the writing team and provide feedback.
