Explore the “fun”damentals of acting and improv! Students learn foundational acting and improv skills and explore how to use their bodies, voices and minds to create characters and imaginary circumstances. Through interactive warm-ups and skills-building activities, students develop improv and acting techniques as they build confidence and stretch their imagination. This class will strengthen social interactions and develop effective listening and communication skills. All levels welcome.

Principles of acting are explored in this fun and supportive class created specifically for teens. Students learn to “dig deep” in this foundational class, exploring basic acting techniques, analyzing scripts, and developing full-bodied characters from the inside out using monologues and scenes taken from contemporary plays. Warm-ups, theater games and in-class performances help students grow in self-confidence, public speaking, and creativity. Family and friends are invited to a showcase at the end of the semester.

BROADWAY DANCE SKILLS

Broadway Dance Skills is the exploration of traditional and contemporary Broadway dance that include elements of ballet, jazz and modern dance. It’s the perfect class for students who want to improve their dance foundation and focus on steps and routines found in musical theater dance. Students will refine skills for auditions and performances. This intermediate/advanced-level class hones students’ core technique while introducing a variety of movement styles. Previous dance and/or musical theater experience recommended.

MUSICAL THEATER SINGING
GRADES: 6 – 12

This group singing class is perfect for students who love show tunes. Students learn songs from some of Broadway's greatest composers while focusing on healthy vocal and breathing techniques, creating a character through song, and developing overall stage presence. Basic music theory and sight-reading instruction are included. All levels are welcome as students sing in group numbers and explore their specific skill level through solos and duets.

Powered by the chart-topping hits of the undisputed Princess of Pop, “Once Upon a One More Time Jr.” turns our favorite fairytales upside down with a clever twist! When a fairy godmother goes rogue and plops copies of “The Feminine Mystique” in the laps of classic heroines, the damsels set on a quest to rewrite their stories and redefine “happily ever after.” The Broward Center has been selected by Music Theater International (MTI) to produce a pilot production of “Once Upon a One More Time Jr.” As one of the first theaters in the country to produce the junior version of this brand-new original musical, Broward Center students have a unique opportunity to continue developing their musical theater skills while working on an exciting pilot production. Don't miss the chance to have the once upon a time of your life with this fairytale set to Britney Spears’ biggest hits.
Classes and rehearsals culminate in three performances on May 22 & 23 at 7:30 PM and May 24 at 2 PM in the Amaturo Theater. There will be a sneak peek of this performance at the Spring Spectacular on Apr 23 at 7:30 PM.

In an all-encompassing theatrical experience, students learn acting, singing and dancing as well as production disciplines such as costumes, props, make-up and staging and use these skills to put on a final show in the Amaturo Theater. The children are rising up in this gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! “Matilda JR.” tells the story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires and will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson. Join the revolt in this Broadway Junior adaptation of the Tony Award-winning hit! This class is offered in partnership with the Performance Project, Inc.
Students are expected to attend the first day of class as auditions will be held to cast roles for the final performances.

Advanced techniques in acting, singing and dance are integrated into the rehearsal process and culminate in a full-length musical production of “The Addams Family School Edition”. Get ready for a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s new boyfriend and his parents. Offered in partnership with The Performance Project, Inc.

Broward Center Spotlights is a performing vocal ensemble for students who love to sing in front of an audience. This audition-based musical theater program trains students to perform solos, duets and group numbers along with choreography for various Broward Center and community events. Team-taught by a professional music director and choreographer, students gain top-tier instruction in song and dance, musicianship, improved vocal technique and song interpretation, and build dance skills and stage presence using some of Broadway’s greatest songs. Past appearances include Christmas on Las Olas, Trick or Treat on 2nd Street, live television shows, Coffeehouse Cabarets and Broadway at the Beach. This class culminates with a public performance of our Spring Spectacular in the Amaturo Theater. Class fee includes a Broward Center Spotlights t-shirt.
